Impact of conditions of use on selected properties of furniture particleboards finished with melamine film

Piotr Borysiuk, Agnieszka Furmanik, Radosław Auriga

    Abstract

The study examined the effect of the relative humidity of air on selected properties of particleboard for furniture, finished with melamine film. Industrial P2 type particleboards were subjected to the air conditioning at 20°C and relative humidity of 40% and 75% for seven days. The following parameters were determined for tested boards: humidity, density profile, modulus of rupture and modulus of elasticity in static bending, a tensile strength in a direction perpendicular to the planes of the board, swelling in thickness and water absorption after soaking in water for 24 hours. The results showed that the increase in relative humidity of air at working conditions significantly increases particleboards’ humidity. That causes changes in their strength parameters, however, a statistically significant decrease in value was noted only for the modulus of elasticity. After the air-conditioning process, the boards indicated reduced swelling in thickness and comparable water absorption.

The selected problems of the modelling of the depth profiles of the elements implanted to the tools used in wood material machining

Marek Barlak, Jacek Wilkowski, Zbigniew Werner

    Abstract

The paper presents the selected problems with the modeling of the depth profiles of nitrogen implanted to WC-Co tools, used to wood-based material machining. The influence of the kind of the modeling program and its setup, the properties of the substrate material and the kind of the ion beam on the obtained results were presented. The weakest influence was observed for different content of cobalt and the substrate material density, and the largest - for different kinds of the implanted ions.

The effect of nitrogen ions separation in the implantation process of the WC-Co tools surface layer on their lifetime during chipboard milling

Jacek Wilkowski, Marek Barlak, Roman Böttger, Zbigniew Werner

    Abstract

The paper presents the effect of nitrogen ion separation in the implantation process of the tools surface layer made of standard cemented carbide (WC-Co). The tools in the form of indexable knives for milling heads were modified with the use of implantation devices with and without ion separation. The lifetime of tools modified by two methods and the control tools (virgin, unmodified) were verified during milling of three-layer chipboard with constant cutting parameters. The machining was carried out on a CNC machining center. The criterion of blunting tools was the value of 0.2 mm of the direct wear indicator, measured on the flank surface, defined as the maximum width of wear zone (VBmax). The implantation process significantly increased the total milling length of wood-based panel until the tool achieved a direct blunting criterion. The influence of ion separation in the implantation process on the lifetime of milling indexable knives has also been demonstrated. Implantation without separation of nitrogen ions increased the average lifetime of the blades, while increasing their durability coefficient of variation. On the other hand, the use of ion separation increased the lifetime to a lesser extent, while reducing the coefficient of variation of tool life.

Applicability of wood molasses as an adhesive crosslinked with methoxymethylmelamines

Tomasz Karkowski, Mariusz Mamiński

    Abstract

The present work regards chacteristics of wood molasses and attempts to crosslink it with methoxymethylmelamines. Mixtures of molasses with methoxymethylmelamines in 1:1, 2:1 or 4:1 weight ratios were cured with p-toluenesulfonic acid. Observed gel times varied between 185 s and 75 s, while shear strengths of the bondlines in solid beech wood ranged from 6.5 MPa to 9.4 MPa. Physicochemical properties of adhesives and mechanical properties of bondlines indicate plausibility of further development of that type of adhesives.
